Six Kina Bank employees have volunteered their time and expertise to support students at the Motu Koita Flexible Open and Distance Education (FODE) Centre in Hanuabada through the Learning Café program.
Delivered through Kina Bank’s Employee Volunteer Program in partnership with the Kokoda Track Foundation (KTF), the Learning Café connected 31 students from Grades 9 to 12 with volunteer tutors from across the Bank, providing academic support, practical study skills and encouragement ahead of their exams and tests.
Volunteers from Kina Bank’s Operations, People & Culture, Treasury & Wholesale Banking and Wealth teams led interactive small-group sessions covering English, Mathematics, Business Studies, History, Economics and Time Management. The Learning Café format created a supportive environment where students could ask questions, work through challenges and receive personalised guidance.
Kina Bank Head of Talent and Development Eddie Sukanaivalu said the initiative reflected the Bank’s commitment to supporting education and empowering communities through both financial investment and employee engagement.
“Education creates opportunities, and we are proud to support students as they prepare for this important stage of their academic journey. Through volunteering, our employees can share their knowledge and experience in a way that helps build confidence and inspire future success.”
The activity builds on Kina Bank’s longstanding partnership with KTF, which established the Motu Koita FODE Centre in 2020 to provide second-chance secondary education opportunities for young people from the Motu Koita communities. Since opening with 105 students during the COVID-19 pandemic, enrolment has grown to 162 students in 2026.
KTF Chief Executive Officer, Dr Genevieve Nelson, acknowledged the impact of the volunteers’ contribution.
“The generosity of Kina Bank’s volunteers goes well beyond the time they spend in the classroom. By stepping away from their busy professional roles to share their skills, knowledge and experience, they are providing valuable support and encouragement to students preparing for their national examinations,” Dr Nelson said.
Through initiatives such as the Learning Café, Kina Bank continues to invest in education and community partnerships that create lasting opportunities for young Papua New Guineans.
